The data of 13th census of India, collated in the year 2001 is new with respect to Chhattisgarh as the state was formed in the year 2000.The total population of Chhattisgarh according to the 2001 census is 2,07,59,956 which is 2.02% of India’s total population. As per the current information, literacy rates have improved in Chhattisgarh over time. The growth rate of population has declined from 26 % to 18%. per the previous data, and this has increased to 990 in the year 2001.Chhattisgarh stands 17th in the country in terms of total population. The literacy rate of Chhattisgarh has increased by 23% in the last 10 years; the present literacy rate being 65.18%. The average density of population in Chhattisgarh is 154 persons/sq Km.

According to the 2001 census, the total population of Chhattisgarh is 20,795,956 of which 10,452,426 are males and 10,343,530 are females. The decadal growth rate for 1991-2002 has been estimated to be 18.06%, which is 7.67% less than that of 1981-1991. The population of children between 0 – 6 years in Chhattisgarh is 3,469,774. The districts with maximum population are Raipur, Durg, Bilaspur, Surguja and Bastar respectively. The districts with minimum population are Kawardha, Koria, Kanker, Dhamtari and Dantewada.

  According to the 2001 census, the average density of population / sq Km is 154 persons which is 24 persons more than that of the previous decade. The most densely populated district of Chhattisgarh is Janjgir Champa with 342 persons/sq Km; Dantewada on the other hand is the most scarcely populated district with 41 persons/sq Km.
